scripts and saving files

well who woulda thunk it. writing windows batch files and scripts is not as hard as i thought. i set out to backup the data flowing through my home. here is my setup..

1 main desktop (emachine t-6000, 64bit workstation at 2ghz)
1.5gb of ram
250gb hard disk
windows xp sp2

laptop 1 (amd sempron 3500+ at 1.8ghz)
1.5gb of ram
60gb hard disk
windows vista

laptop 2 (amd sempron 3500+ at 1.8ghz)
1.5gb of ram
60gb hard disk
windows xp sp2

netgear sc101 nas device
(2) 320gb hard disks mirrored

i had to figure out a backup strategy here to cover about 35gb of data between the wife and me. so since i cannot afford a legit copy of backup exec and i dont want to do anything bad ;). I started reading quickly on batch scripting something i never did at my last place of employment. lo and behold 20min later i setup the following scenario:

monday through thursday batch script “changed” runs on laptop 1 at 10am backing up all changed files to my emachine then at 3pm “changed” runs on laptop 2 to cover its files to emachine.

friday batch script “full” runs on laptop 1 at 10am copying all files on it to emachine, then at 3pm “full” runs on laptop 2 copying it’s files to emachine.

friday batch script “full runs” on emachine at 10pm backing up all files accumalated during the week to my nas device.

i think all bases are covered. how do you handle your home backups. drop me a line here or leave a comment.

till next post.
